This is the big dream: sign a book deal and go on a book tour, fall in love and live the good life. These deals are usually reserved for authors who have already had big success and for famous citizens like politicians, athletes, entertainers, big business CEOs, and the super rich. The chances of a new author getting past the first step of the process landing a literary agent to promote their work is very slim.
Positives: the potential of a book deal with a big advance, while small, is very exciting to a new author, as is having a big and knowledgeable team behind you.
Negatives: loss of author's creative control, lengthy release expectation (may be years before your book is released), publishers take a larger share of profits.
Think of Hybrid publishing as a shared venture with author and publisher sharing across all lines. Profits, expenses, creative, etc.
Positives: You partner with an organization who already understands the very complicated world of publishing and getting your book out to readers, while sharing the expenses of publishing.
Negatives: sharing profits.
Positives: 100% author control and keep all profits.
Negatives: You do everything yourself, you are the author, the sales person, the tech support, etc. No support of an outside institution.
